As the new 2019 San Diego Chapter President, I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! Our chapter had a great year in 2018, raising over $3000 for the charity Honor Flight, successfully hosted the CPCU Society Annual Meeting, hosted 3 well-attended Lunch & Learns, a great Member Appreciation event at Karl Strauss Brewery, and finished the year with over 100 chapter members! I’d personally like to thank last year’s board members, our Immediate Past President Jason Hopkins, and everyone else who volunteered their time and energy into supporting the Chapter, the Society, and our industry in 2018.
I would also like to say congratulations and a huge thank you to Janice Romero who earned our 2018 AJ Romero Memorial Volunteer Service Award and to Liberty Mutual who earned our 2018 Company of the Year Award.
I’ve had the pleasure to serve with Janice on the San Diego Chapter Board for three years now and she’s always ready to step up and give it her all. Many others share this sentiment:
“She has been serving the board for a long time and always brings new ideas. She created a new sponsorship supporting Promises2Kids during the Annual Meeting in San Diego.”
“[She’s] always there and truly a "first responder" with her time and talent to advance our chapter's goals.”
Liberty Mutual received our Company of the Year Award for their persistent support in the Chapter and their encouragement of continued education and self-improvement.
Moving into the new year, I would like to continue our Chapter’s success. It’s our goal to work with the national society to build the value in both the CPCU designation and Society membership even more. We’ve heard your responses to our 2018 Membership Survey and hope to offer more Lunch & Learns with Continuing Education Credit, we’re exploring the possibility of a second Member Appreciation Event, we want to do even more for local charities, and celebrate and encourage diversity within our business.
I speak from personal experience when I say that the CPCU Designation and my participation in our local chapter have allowed me to build the successful career I have today. It was the combination of academic study and practical experience which allowed me to enter the Property & Casualty industry as a clerk in 2011, work my way up to SIU Investigator, and eventually move into my current role as an Underwriting Supervisor. Melissa Motush earned her CPCU in 2016 and says, “Having my CPCU has encouraged me be more involved in the industry, network and take on additional leadership opportunities.”
I encourage you all to renew your membership and volunteer some time to support your local San Diego Chapter—the experience will pay dividends! As an incentive to renew your membership, we’ll select 10 San Diego Chapter members who renew their membership before August 31, 2019 to win a $10 Amazon gift card. If you’d like to become more involved in our chapter and help shape it’s great future, you’re invited to attend our next board meeting which is open to any current member. It will be held on Wednesday, February 6th, 2019 at Wawanesa Insurance in Mission Valley (9040 Friars Rd, Floor 3, Encinitas Room) from 12:00pm to 1:00pm.
Keep your eyes peeled for more info to come and here’s to another amazing year!
